OCTOBER 2007 FEATURE: HELPING MR. RIGHT KNOW YOUR STYLE
Okay, so your man is not Mr. Metrosexual, but he is Mr. Right. As wonderful as it would be if men could be more observant of our tastes or to just know what we like, let’s be realistic and admit that most need our guiding hand. Truth is, unlike most women, most men are just not wired to observe style variations. If you keep him in the dark about the essentials of your style, is it really his fault that you now have an antique piece when you are really a modern girl?Men like to surprise us… bless their hearts. And men don’t want to be pressured. Men want to be in control of their own sphere and to know that they have a choice. So, then, how do we help them get a clue about our style and what items complement it, without being too obvious?

Here are some ways you can do your bit to help, like dropping hints such as the ones below:

  • Whenever you come across something you like, tell your guy what you like about it. “I really like how yellow gold complements my skin tone.”
  • Get a card from the jewelry store where you saw something you liked and write the style number on the backside. Make sure your man sees the card somehow, like by leaving it on your desk. When he picks it up, he’ll think he hit pay dirt!
  • Tell him you really like Jane Doe’s jewelry designs and anything fromany of her collections would be a dream come true, as her designs match your personal style to a T.
  • Find a jeweler/designer that will keep a wish list for you, and make sure your significant other knows of this person, so he can go straight to him or her when it’s time to get you that perfect gift.
  • Have your favorite jeweler/designer remind your man ahead of time that your birthday is coming up, so they can offer him gift ideas from your wish list!
  • Since men often go to your best friends for help with gift ideas, make sure these key people know your style and wish list.
  • Many guys shy away from jewelry store windows because of the price tags, so be sure to ease the blow by outlining several options in different price ranges. If you love it and he can afford it—everyone’s happy!
  • When you are out and about at art/jewelry shows or just shopping, stop at a window and point directly to what you like!
  • Communicate your style in terms he’ll grasp, such as “classic,” “modern,” or “flashy.”
  • You can suggest having something custom made for you, or hint at designing something together to make it a fun project.
  • What you don’t like is as important as what you do like, so be sure to point out items you don’t like and express your distaste for them, so he can snap a mental picture.

One more tip: Don’t drop hints during televised sporting events, poker nights, or while he’s otherwise distracted. The communication channels may not be open in your favor; in other words, he’ll be totally tuned out.

May you find yourself bejeweled in your favorites soon!
