NOVEMBER 2007 FEATURE: A SUNNY DISPOSITION FOR THIS MONTH’S BIRTHSTONE
As temperatures drop during these crisp November days, we’ve chosen to feature one of three of this month’s traditional birthstones, the citrine, which is more than appropriate. Its warm hues complement the season’s color schemes with a sunny brightness that’s alluring for year-round wear as well. The yellow topaz and pearl are November’s other traditional birthstones, but with all that citrine has going for it, we couldn’t wait for the opportunity to shine the spotlight on it.From Mellow to Not-So Yellow

A rare, yellow variety of quartz, the name citrine is derived from the French word for lemon, “citron,” as the ideal citrine is a perfect lemony yellow. Because it is virtually impossible to tell a topaz from a cut citrine without a trained eye and a loop, unscrupulous dealers often sell citrine as topaz, breeding the perception that citrine is nothing more than a fake topaz. Well, truth is that citrine is a beautiful, legitimate gemstone, and just happens to be a splendid—and more affordable—alternative to the yellow topaz, thanks to its availability. And with a rating of “7” on the Mohs Hardness Scale, citrine is an excellent choice for any piece of jewelry, as it can easily withstand everyday wear-and-tear.

Citrine ranges in color from pale yellow to reddish brown. The most valuable of the stones are those found in a natural pale-yellow color, as darker and/or more saturated citrine is actually amethyst or smoky quartz that has either been heat-treated in a laboratory or naturally subjected to extreme heat conditions, such as molten rock.

“Empirical” Evidence

The use of citrine as a gemstone is thought to have begun with the Romans, who crafted them into cabachons or simply set highly polished, un-cut stones into their jewelry. It was during the Romantic Period, however, that citrine became more popular, as artisans chose them for their sheer beauty when paired with gold.

Golden Opportunity

For November birthdays and those who just love yellow gems, we’re certain you’re in luck with a choice like citrine. It’s not only a gorgeous and hearty gemstone, you’ll be surprised what and how much your money can buy. Moreover, what to look for when shopping for citrine and how to care for it once it’s yours is pretty simple: be wary of gemstone names with prefixes that throw you off; in other words, do your homework. Lastly, a piece of jewelry set with citrine will last for generations, as long as it’s not left in the sun or in extreme heat conditions.
