I always say the biggest luxury is having something custom made specifically for you. While that is what I do for others this time I was able to experience that for myself.
My friend Rory Cunningham, gifted me with this amazing little black dress which I describe as out of this world! Rory is obviously talented. He makes detailed intricate costumes for the movies. Some of the projects that were released in 2013 include: “Oblivion”, “Man of Steel”, “Saving Mr. Banks“, HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” and performers at the Oscars (this year too!). He has fit Emma Thompson, Diane Lane, Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Dame Judi Dench, Ming-Na Wen, oh! let’s not forget Henry Cavill. And so many more!!! I bet he knows all their measurements but is sworn to secrecy.
Needless to say I was quite beside myself sitting next to him as he deftly sketched out designs with a pad and pen designing around the fabric and my preferences. Asking me similar question to what I ask my clients. It was a fun experience. Because let’s face it …how often does one get to have something “all about me!”?
Here are photos of some preliminary drapes on a mannequin to help me choose. They were all great options. The stand up cowl neckline was the clincher! In the end I chose this asymmetrical futuristic look. It pairs nicely with the fabric and the criss cross texturing Rory created with the fabric. Luxurious construction inside and out, the seams are hand finished in silk chiffon. Tada! This stunning one of a kind little black dress, with high collar off to one side and the hem following suit made me feel glamorous!
Thank you Rory, for your generosity and talent. You are my super hero dress designer! xoxo
