“Draw for yourself, paint for yourself, take photographs for yourself, you will love them much more.” — Tony Viramontes
I recently saw the work of fashion illustrator, Tony Viramontes on display at L.A.’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum Gallery space. With striking lines and bold colors, he captured not only fashion, but also the essence of who someone was. I think it was best explained when author Dean Rhys Morgan wrote, “Fashion, art and life were indistinguishable to Viramontes.” Morgan’s new book about the illustrator is titled: Bold, Beautiful And Damned: The World Of 1980s Fashion Illustrator Tony Viramontes. It seems to me that because Viramontes saw those three things: fashion, art and life, as completely and utterly intertwined; bold, vibrant life was breathed into his sketches.
Have an infinitely modern day!
