Peridot, also named Chrysolite a variety of olivine, is the birthstone for August. Sometimes referred to the “evening emerald” due to its green color but the difference is the yellow tint also contained in Peridot. It is considered a symbol of power and influence and is often said to increase good luck, fame, health and peace.
Unlike most other birthstones Peridot comes in only one color but it does have a range of shades varying from pale to olive. Created from volcanic activity the stone is often found in tiny slivers on the beaches of Hawaii and also in Arizona; besides those two USA locations it is found mainly in the eastern hemisphere, but most often it is mined from St. John’s Island in the Red Sea just east of Egypt. Lovely specimens also come from Myanmar and Madagascar.
