A Brief Valentine’s Day History
There are many versions of the origins of Valentine’s Day, most of which contain elements of both Christian and Roman tradition. The one we like the best contends that in third century Rome, Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers than married ones.
Catholic Bishop Valentine, later Saint Valentine, defied the emperor’s law and secretly married some young couples. When the emperor found out, he sentenced Valentine to death. During his imprisonment, he fell in love with the jailor’s daughter, and before his death, wrote her a love letter. It was signed, “From your Valentine”.
While there are other versions of this legend, all center around love and commitment. Commitment to one’s self, others and one’s belief is an important philosophy at Claudia Endler Designs.
