Making their Commitment Legal

What/who did you make a commitment to?

Each other, our daughter and our lives together.

What was going on in your life and prompted you to make this commitment?

We actually made a commitment to each other almost 15 years ago. It didn’t take long for us to realize our connection, to know we were meant to build a life together. We have seen each other through hard times and loss, as well as the best moments of our lives so far–like the birth of our daughter and every day we get to spend together as a family. When the Supreme Court struck down Prop 8, we acted immediately. We know that we are fortunate to live in a time of great progress in civil rights, and are grateful for the support of our friends and family and the larger political movement that led to this opportunity. Finally getting married–and the recognition that our commitment is legal–is one more beautiful, bright spot in our life-long journey together.

Why did you choose this design? How does it make you feel?

We’re thrilled to finally be making commitment legal. When we looked at rings to help symbolize our commitment, one of them appealed to us repeatedly. The smooth, sanded finish of the solid band, and the diamond set off in the bezel setting was gorgeous. We were able to use the diamond from a century-old family engagement ring for one of them, too, which completely reflected our union–traditional and modern all rolled into one.
