My father laughed when I told him that I wanted to write about what his thoughts were on commitment and what it meant to him.
My father is old school where you do not talk about these things much, you just do them. “Commitment is my word.” He said, “To me, if I make a promise I have to do it.” I asked, “Well you make this promise because you want to make this promise, right?” He replied “Yes, of course, it is my choice.”
“If I say ‘Yes’ to something then I do not go back on this YES. Of course when you were smaller my commitment was to my family, to doing well at my job. If I took a job then it was my commitment to do the best at this job I possibly could. It is just understood.”
Even now, when my father drives me to the airport at all hours of the night or day, and hugs me good bye at the curb, he still says, “Let me know if there is anything Claudia, anything at all you need. I am just a phone call away. I will be there.” And I know he will because he has.
To those Father’s who are their word. In gratitude.
Happy Father’s Day
