JUNE’S FEATURE: The Timeless Tiara
Wedding season is most definitely underway. Love is in the air, bells are ringing, and this year’s bridal fashions are revealing a whole new set of approaches to wedding-day wear. New approaches include short dresses, bold color combinations, hand-painted imagery, and romance to the max. But some things never change. Throughout time, the tiara has remained among the most special pieces, if not the most special in bridal couture. Moreover, tiaras are making their way into everyday fashions, as well. Also known as diadems, tiaras have crowned royalty and nobility since ancient times, changing dramatically in style and materials throughout the centuries. From a historical standpoint, the purpose of the tiara was to showcase the family jewel collection for emphasis on social status.

It is difficult, however, to trace the tiara’s development, having had such a ubiquitous presence around the world and across cultures. In ancient Egypt, for example, headdresses were heavy, highly conspicuous, and very elaborate. Around the same time, Grecian goldsmiths crafted them for statues honoring gods and deities, as well as for prizes awarded to contest winners, while the Romans adopted the tiara to differentiate its high-ranking citizens from the masses.

During Classical times, kings and queens opted for modest cloth bandeaus tied in a basic knot at the back of the head. It wasn’t long, however, before tiaras would again become the ultimate identifier of class and style. Napoleon’s prosperous empire ushered in the era of opulent court life among Parisian high society, during which exquisite jewelry design flourished. The craze spread throughout Europe, and not to be outdone, Russian royalty took things a step further, outshining its international counterparts in exhibiting its riches with some of the most magnificent tiaras ever made.

It was during the dawn of the 20th century that tiaras reached the height of their popularity, becoming more common across social classes and becoming an important part of bridal wear. Despite socioeconomic changes brought about by WWI, tiaras held their place firmly on the heads of women throughout the industrialized world, changing dramatically in design to adapt to such things as the bobbed hairstyles and Art Deco aesthetics of the 1920s and ’30s.

With the onset of WWII, however, tiaras took somewhat of a hiatus for a few decades in all but the highest circles of society. Although not for long, for as recently as five years ago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London hosted a grand party to mark the opening of its tiara exhibition, bringing together royalty, A-List celebrities, and aristocracy. The display featured 200 tiaras, including four on loan from the Queen Mother’s collection, one from Dame Edna, and a rhinestone tiara from Elton John, purchased in Los Angeles.

Perhaps what’s saved the tiara from extinction is its incredible adaptability to emerging generations and fashions. The timeless headdress is no longer just the domain of high society and the tradition-bound. Some of the hottest pieces out there are now are crafted by renowned contemporary jewelry designers. Modern touches and lightweight materials, including affordable choices such as crystal, rhinestone, and glass, are making tiaras more ubiquitous than ever. They’ve been spotted on episodes of Sex and the City, on Madonna, who pairs them with jeans, and on a handful of other unlikely celebrities.
