NEW “JEWEL”
“In re-purposing your stones, we bring them back to life.” – ce

One of our clients had a piece of jewelry, kept in her drawer for years. This keepsake belonged to her husband’s mother, in the form of a pendant with antique features. Our client wanted a modern look that would be bold and yet still give her the ability to work with her hands, without it getting in the way of the museum costumes and textiles of which she is the curator. This ring was exactly what she wanted and it meant a lot to her husband that she wears the stones that have so much meaning to both of them.

The earrings below are orange sapphires. Yes…believe it or not. Set in 14k yellow gold square studs for $475. They are about ¼ inch across. They are available in other gemstones, white gold and platinum.

JUNE’S FEATURE: Paraiba! What’s That?
A neon blue colored stone that literally looks like the turquoise waters of the Bahama’s (even though I have never been there) or “swimming pool blue” (if you have never been there either) is a “paraiba tourmaline”. We had several people coming to our booth at the Contemporary Craft Market inquiring for such a stone. A few years ago no one had even heard of this unusual and rare gem.Discovered in the 1980s, the world owes this find to Heitor Dimas Barbosa. Never tiring, he had been digging with his helpers for years in the pegmatite layers of a small mountain range. Small, rare and very valuable, these tourmalines are mined at the Mina da Bathalha in the Brazilian state of Paraiba.

Tourmaline crystals mined in the “fine hill” at Paraiba are almost exclusively fragments and splinters. Larger, non-fragmented rough stones weighing over 5 grams are rare, and only very few achieve weights of more than 20 grams. Therefore, only a select few jewelers will even carry this kind of stone.

The vivid turquoise blue to green colors are not shown by any other gemstone in the world. Paraiba tourmaline owes its spectacular color to copper; an element that had not shown up in tourmalines before.

Today, these stones are some of the most coveted and most expensive stones in the world. Especially in Japan, the world’s largest importer of paraiba, retail prices are commanding over $40,000/ct for the finest specimens.

We saw a few small specimens, while attending the Tucson Gem Faire. And the unique pleasure of seeing a very large specimen that retails in the range of $100,000/ct. Needless to say, we were mesmerized by these treasures.
