JANUARY’S FEATURE: What You Don’t Know About Ring Sizing
Getting the correct ring size can be a little more challenging than you think. Fingers have a tendency to swell and shrink during the day. This is normal. Try and find something that will fit you most of the time. Taking them off or switching fingers is also an option. If your rings are uncomfortably tight most of the time, it may well be time to size them up a bit.How wide is the ring?

  • The wider the ring the bigger the size, as you are displacing more skin.
  • A 2mm band will fit about size smaller than a 5 mm band. So, when sizing an even wider band, say a 10mm band, you may need to go up a whole size.

What hand are you wearing your ring on?

  • Most people have a dominant hand. If you are right handed, the same ring will fit more loosely on the same finger of your left hand.
  • The difference is about – .

When a ring is too big, what do you do?
This depends on how much bigger the ring is and how the ring is made.

  • Option I: Cut the shank of the ring, taking out metal, and solder it closed again. This option may not be possible, if the ring has a stone.
  • Option II: Solder or laser two balls on the inside of the lower shank. This will provide a more snug fit and help keep it from turning on your finger. It also allows your finger to swell comfortably.

When a ring is too small?

  • Rings can be sized up using a mandrel and a hammer.
  • They can also be sized by carving out a little metal from the inside of the shank, depending on how much metal is in the shank and how many sizes up you need to go.
  • The shank can be cut open and metal soldered or lasered in.
  • The shank of the ring may need to be replaced entirely.

Your jeweler or designer will know the best options to size your ring properly. Like anything else, things that are custom made may need to be adjusted for fit.
