FEBRUARY’S FEATURE: Tucson Gem Fair 2006
Another year of fantastic finds with which to tempt you all. Size does matter, when it comes to the impact of color. The larger the stone the more color saturation. Large stones are as popular as ever and can be found in many different shapes. If you like cocktail rings with large gemstones, we can visualize them with a new modern look.We are taught that diamonds are the most precious gem material. When attending this show one sees gemstones so rare that no diamond could compare. They become mere accent stones. A turquoise blue rare gem, paraiba tourmaline, went for $65,000/ct wholesale. Needless to say, we were mesmerized.Einstein Rings were new at the show this year as well. The actual stone pavement from Einstein’s home in Switzerland was transformed in to large polished rings. Any chance in being as enlightened as he was? There is always the hope. Also, new was the introduction of green amethyst. Yes, green. It is irradiated to change the color. Lovely.Specialty cuts in larger stones are all the rage. Unusual faceting from the bottom out give sculptural visual effects of star bursts. Pieces of aquamarine and smokey quartz, highly polished on one side and chiseled on the other, create an effect of sculpted ice. We worked with the cutters and brought a few home with us. They are already getting lots of attention. Tourmaline came in hues of blues, greens, teals, including bi-colored stones and color changing stones. We selected these gems in cabuchon and mirror cuts. The colors are eye catching. Adding a CED design element to compliment a strand of graduated green tourmaline will make a great neck piece.

Another stone that caught our eye this year was the rhudilated quartz. This clear material has gold-like threads running through it. They are crystals growing within crystals. We hand selected special pieces from our Brazilian source, because they had the best. Look for a new collection, coming soon.

INDUSTRY NEWS
  • Gold prices have risen again, higher than they have been in years. Sad, but true. Jewelry will also go up in price. If you were quoted a price, and have not yet purchased, you may need to be re-quoted.
  • In Tokyo, a diamond Christmas cake went on sale. The Tokyo pastry chef who created the work of art said, “it took six months to develop the design and one month to actually make the cake.” The fruitcake itself was edible — apart from the 223 small diamonds on it. It went on sale at Christmas for a whopping $1.65 million. (The Associated Press.)

THE WAY OF CHIC:
Spice things up by wearing something red. One accent piece is all you need or the entire, sexy red dress. Either never hurt.
