“February is the month for celebrating red and love… and life.” – ce

If you need a little inspiration to wear red, don’t worry. Red comes in many shades. Don’t forget pink. Here, we have a large oval-cut carnelian cabochon ring in 14k yellow gold, $1,450. Reddish carnelian drop earrings with post in 14k white gold, $595. Small, square-cut, bezel-set ruby studs in 14k yellow, $475 (available in other gemstones, too). Marquis ring with pink tourmaline in 14k yellow gold, $1,500.

WHAT IS CARNELIAN?

Also called “cornelian”, this translucent, reddish-orange variety of chalcedony was once thought to still the blood and calm the temper. The various shades of red are due to the presence of iron oxide. The best carnelian comes from India and has a hardness of 7.

FEBRUARY’S FEATURE: The Color Red
What color actually is red? It comes in so many shades from bright to dark, crimson to scarlet to pink and everything in between. Red is powerful. Like no other color, it captures your attention.Red is, supposedly, the first color perceived by Man. Red, a color of strength, has both positive and negative connotations. Red is associated with anger, death, blood and love. Yes, “Love”. Love makes your hear beat faster and blood run quicker.

Red has a long rich history. Neolithic cave painters ascribed magical powers to the color. They painted animals in red ochre or iron oxide to conjure their fertility. The special powers of the color red protected them against evil influences.

Red garlands and scarves were part of wedding customs in many cultures. Roman brides were wrapped in a fiery red veil, the flammeum, which would warrant love and fertility. Greek, Albanian and Armenian brides wear red veils even today. Red wedding gowns were en vogue in Nurnberg of the 18th century. Chinese brides wear red wedding gowns and are carried to the ceremony in a red litter. The bride walks on a red carpet and is greeted by the groom who lifts her red veil. (Could this have been the first red carpet?) Neighbors bring red eggs to the couple, after a child is born.

The red rose is the symbol of love and fidelity. It was dedicated to the goddesses of love, Greek Aphrodite and Roman Venus. Could this be why we give red roses on Valentine’s Day?

Louis the XIV of France supposedly had great legs. He wore pants that came to the knee with tights and high heels with red or scarlet heels. Soon, it became fashionable for the wealthy in society to wear the scarlet heels. It was a color reserved for the rich, because it’s color came from insects that infest cactus plants that the Spanish then imported from Mexico… A costly endeavor, to say the least.

Luckily these days, red is accessible to the common folk in every shade. This month we are celebrating the colors of Red.

FROM ONE OF OUR CLIENTS
“I was wonderfully surprised with a pair of gorgeous white gold earrings for my wedding anniversary, (I’m wearing them right now). I wanted to let you know how beautiful they are and what a fabulous compliment they are to the pendant necklace we bought at last year’s CaBoom show. I love your work and always peruse all your mailings.” – Debbie J., Architect

THE WAY OF CHIC:
They say good food is the way to a man’s heart. It is also the way to a woman’s heart.

STYLE RECOGNITION
When you enter, you’ll be impressed by the appealing dcor which includes stylish leather seating, dim lighting and an overall ambience reminiscent of a hip martini lounge. The service is very friendly. The food is clean, not oily or heavy. Everything we had was beautifully presented, including the amazing desert. It can almost be considered art with an intricate, delicate lattice of spun sugar. It looks like hard candy and tastes like cotton candy.Naraya, a Thai fusion restaurant tucked away on Robertson Blvd, is our other gemstone of the month. For more info, visit CitySearch.com.
