| A South African company bought the world’s 15th-largest rough diamond last Monday, paying more than $12 million for the golf-ball sized gem found in the tiny southern African country of Lesotho. South African Diamond Corp., calls the 603-carat stone the “Lesotho Promise.” “We promise you more of the same and better in the future,” company officials told reporters.South African Diamond Corp. said it plans to turn the raw stone into one cut gem of over 60 carats, in addition to other smaller stones, with a final sale price of more than $20 million. Experts have graded the stone “class D,” saying it is of the clearest quality, with no color blemishes. The Lesotho Promise was found in August at the Letsing mine, where in 1967 a 601-carat stone was discovered and named the “Lesotho Brown”, because of its color.
The largest diamond ever found, the Cullinan, was the size of a bowling ball at 3,106 carats (621.35 g) in the rough. That finished stone is set in Britain’s Imperial Sceptre as part of the Crown Jewels. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine. Although a carbonado found in Brazil weighed more than 3,600 carats (720 g), no gem-quality material could be extracted from it. The stone was bought and presented to King Edward VII. It was cut into three large parts by Asscher Brothers of Amsterdam, and eventually into some 11 large gem-quality stones and a number of smaller fragments. At the time, technology had not yet evolved to guarantee quality of the modern standard, and cutting the diamond was considered difficult and risky. “The tale is told of Joseph Asscher, the greatest cleaver of the day,” wrote Michael Hart in his book Diamond: A Journey to the Heart of an Obsession, “that when he prepared to cleave the largest diamond ever known, the 3,160-carat Cullinan, he had a doctor and nurse standing by and when he finally struck the diamond and it broke perfectly in two, he fainted dead away.” The largest polished gem from the stone is named Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa, at 530.2 carats (106.04 g) grade D colorless. It was the largest polished diamond in the world, until the 1985 discovery of the Golden Jubilee diamond (545.67 cts), also from the Premier mine. The second largest gem from the Cullinan stone, Cullinan II or the Lesser Star of Africa, at 317.4 carats (63.48 g), is the third largest polished diamond in the world and is also part of the British Crown Jewels, in the Imperial State Crown. Both gems are on display at the Tower of London. Another notable is the Taylor-Burton. A diamond purchased by actor Richard Burton for his wife Elizabeth Taylor to celebrate her fortieth birthday in 1972. The diamond is 69.42 carats (13.88 g) and was cut into a pear shape by jeweler Harry Winston. It was cut from a rough stone weighing 240.80 carats (48.160 g). Found in the Premier mine in 1966, it was subsequently bought by Harry Winston. The Centenary Diamond was discovered in the Premier Mine on July 17, 1986, using an x-ray imaging system. The original rough was 599 carats (119.8 g) and was presented on May 11, 1988, during the Centennial Celebration of the De Beers Consolidated Mines. As then-chairman Julian Ogilvie Thompson said, “We have recovered, at the Premier Mine, a diamond of 599 carats which is perfect in color – indeed it is one of the largest top-color diamonds ever found.
