MAY’S FEATURE: New Diamond Cut Grades
Looking at as many diamonds as we have and having been educated on the perfect proportions of table, depth and pavilion, we still often wonder how is it that what is considered to be an “Ideal Cut” can still face up so individually. Because they are so unique, one diamond can look very different from another with the same proportions. This has never before been accounted for in all the grading systems and certifications. Meaning, there is still some subjectivity when looking at a stone. Now, The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has addressed this issue, by devising a system that includes new attributes in their diamond grade certificates.GIA recently announced the introduction of its new Diamond Cut Grading System for round brilliant diamonds. Over the course of a fifteen-year research project, GIA researchers performed extensive computer modeling of round brilliant diamonds and conducted more than 70,000 observations on actual stones to validate the science. This system can now predict the cut grade for more than 38.5 million proportion sets. The result is a comprehensive Cut Grading System that accurately reflects all the critical cut factors of a round brilliant diamond.

GIA’s extensive research has shown that there is no single set of proportions that defines a well-cut round brilliant diamond. Many different proportions can produce attractive diamonds. A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light: how light strikes the surface, how much enters the diamond and how, and in what form, light returns to your eye.

The result of the research is a display of three new attributes. Brightnessis the combination of all white light reflecting from the surface and interior of a diamond. Fire is the colored flashes that can be seen in a diamond.Scintillation describes the sparkle of light you see in a diamond and the overall pattern of bright and dark areas, when you look at a diamond face-up.

We applaud GIA for taking into account that which we have all known in our hearts to make diamonds beautiful!!!

Of course the final judgment is always left to you. We always ask our clients: Do you think it is beautiful? Does it speak to you? Never let someone else tell you what is beautiful.

Where are the metal prices going?

Currently, they are only going up! Up! Up!! Up!!! At the time this was written, gold was again at a 10% increase from only a few weeks earlier, now at over $705 oz. Prices are touching on an all time high, since October 1980. Platinum is over $1,240 oz and silver is also up, at approximately $14.50 oz. Some attribute soaring prices to, not only a rise in global demand, but political tension over Iran’s nuclear program and a weakening of the US dollar in relation to the Euro.
