Brief History of Platinum
Many believe that platinum is a new metal. Did you know some meteorites contain platinum? The earliest recorded meteorite dates back 2 billion years. Since then, platinum has been seen throughout history. In the Louvre, sits a casket with platinum hieroglyphics that dates to about 700 BC. Some artifacts were discovered in Pre-Columbian South America dating 100 BC. Not knowing what they had, the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th Century named it “platina”, “little silver”. In the mid 1700’s, a Swedish scientist categorized platinum as a precious metal. King Louis XVI of France wore jewelry made of the precious metal. Substantial deposits of platinum were discovered in the 1800’s in Russia and it was officially declared legal tender. Czars and European kings adorned themselves with it. Platinum deposits in Johannesburg, Africa were discovered in the early 1900’s. During WWII, platinum was used by the armaments industry and the creation of platinum jewelry was prohibited. That is why you will see white gold coming into popular use at that time. In the late 1990’s, platinum jewelry made a resurgence. It is now one of the most sought after metals for bridal/wedding jewelry.
The Qualities of Platinum
Rarity – Platinum remains the most precious and most rare metal available. It is 35% more rare than gold. The annual worldwide production of platinum amounts to some 160 tons, compared to an estimated 1,500 tons of gold. It can be found in just a handful of regions of the world. The mining and refining processes are both arduous and time-consuming. For example, in order to extract a single ounce of platinum, about 10 tons of ore need to be mined. After that, the refining process takes a full five months.
Purity – Platinum in jewelry is actually an alloyed group of six heavy metals, including platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. These other metals are so similar to platinum in weight and chemistry that most were not even distinguished from each other, until early in the nineteenth century. It’s the only precious metal used in fine jewelry that is 90% to 95% pure, largely hypoallergenic and tarnish-resistant. Look for platinum jewelry marked 900Pt, 950 Plat or Plat.
Durability – Its density and weight make it more durable than other jewelry metals. It weighs almost twice as much as 14k yellow gold. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones securely. Like all precious metals, platinum scratches, however, the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost, unlike other precious metals.
Luster – Its white luster is unique. White gold is yellow gold with alloys added to make it look white. Most white gold is rhodium plated to look more like platinum. However, the plating eventually wears off. Platinum always holds its white color.
Working with platinum – Working with platinum requires different tools and machinery. It melts at a higher temperature and is more labor intensive to work. When a stone is already set, sizing platinum rings often requires the use of a laser to avoid damage.
