APRIL’S FEATURE: At Peace with Canadian Diamonds
Recent requests for stones originating from Canada have led us to investigate the Canadian gemstone market as a potential supplier for CED. Dealing only in non-conflict diamonds, we were thrilled to discover for ourselves the story of Canadian diamonds and the responsible industry thriving around them.In the 1980s, diamond prospectors and partners Chuck Fipke and Dr. Stu Blusson ventured deep into the icy tundra of Canada’s Northwest Territories in search of minerals associated with diamond production. By 1991, the pair hit pay dirt, discovering the region’s first major commercial deposit and leading to the development of the Ekati diamond mine. But long before Fipke and Blusson hit their stride discovering Ekati, Eira Thomas, daughter of geologist Grenville Thomas, was honing her own mineral exploration expertise.

From the age of six Thomas was accompanying her father on mining expeditions, and by 1992 earned her degree in geology followed by a job at her father’s company, Aber Diamond Corp. In a field largely dominated by males, a very young Thomas was about to make one of the industry’s most notable discoveries yet: the Diavik diamond mine. In the very same year in which she officially entered the field, Thomas spotted a kimberlite pipe while flying over the landscape near the frozen lake of Lac de Gras in a twin-engine plane. This lava-based geologic formation she discovered revealed a multitude of the most premium-grade diamond-producing pipes the world has ever seen.

While maintaining her stake in the diamond industry has been no easy feat, Thomas and her female business partner, Catherine McLeod-Seltzer, continue to make dazzling discoveries in the pristine Northwest Territories of the Canadian Arctic.

As it stands, the Ekati and Diavik diamond mines collectively yield up to 13 million carats annually and are estimated to produce 12 to 15 percent of the world’s diamonds at peak production. Today, Canada’s diamond industry is worth over 2 billion dollars and provides some 4,000 jobs, with a work force of which 50 percent is comprised of Canada’s Aboriginal population. Eight additional mines are scheduled to open in Canada’s Northwest Territories, while cutting and polishing facilities in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal, and Matane have spawned a host of highly skilled professions and a secondary industry that spans the nation.

As the world’s third largest diamond producer by value, Canada’s global impact on ethical diamond industry practices has given all of us at CED a whole new reason to say “I do!”

FROM ONE OF OUR CLIENTS
“The ring is beautiful! It is so simple and elegant, and I love the fact that the diamonds go so far down the sides. It fits well with the others. Thank you so much for your beautiful work!” -Kate B.
