Carl and Melynda: Commitment to Each Other and Family

What or who did you make a commitment to?

We made a commitment to each other and to being a family.

What was going on in your life and prompted you to make this commitment?

Our lives at this point involved quite a few changes: finishing college, starting careers, building a living environment. Many of these big questions were starting to settle and we began looking out over a vast sea of possibility. I don’t think we knew exactly where we were going, but we knew who we absolutely couldn’t go there without. I think commitment is a continuum more than an event.

We have: Committed to ourselves, made a commitment to each other, to our family, to our careers, to having fun and to making it all work, no matter where the road takes us.

Why did you choose this design? How does it make you feel?

I think they chose us. We both appreciate the clean lines and modern sensibility. The form is the content without any added ornament. We just so happened to go to the first public show of a young, budding and idealistic jewelry designer. There was never any comparison shopping. It was love at first sight.

What is your favorite quote that inspires you or you live by? And why?

In 1975 Malcolm Mclaren told Joe Strummer of the Clash to “Write about what moves you.” This came at a time when Joe was trying to understand the creative process and his role in it. I read those words when I was 14 and they have stuck with me ever since. I think this is because it’s the first time I recognized myself as the center in my own life and that my experience and understanding of the world is what defines us and our ability to produce. Write about what moves you.
