History: The Brewery Arts Complex was an operating brewery from 1897 through 1979. The 16-acre lot became an arts complex in 1982 after Los Angeles passed the artist-in-residence housing code, which gave artists the right to rent live/work space in industrially zoned buildings. About 500 artists now live and/or work at The Brewery. For 35 years, many artists have been opening their homes and studios to the public for Artwalks. The Artwalks began as annual events and are now held twice a year.
Who: The Brewery Artwalk Association is a nonprofit 501(c)3 with a board made up entirely of volunteer artists who run the event.
